The French state is trying to regain control of its numeric sovereignty!
France is ready to reduce its dependence on Microsoft and aspires to greater numeric sovereignty! Of course, this won't happen overnight, but the intention is there, and it could well mark the beginning of a major transition.
On April 8th, France officially announced a gradual phase-out of Windows in favor of Linux.
Initially, the Dinum (Interministerial Digital Directorate) plans to migrate around 200 workstations. In a second phase, all ministries should be able to do without American solutions.
It is worth noting that this is a logical continuation of ongoing efforts. The state is increasingly using in-house solutions to move away from American services. Thus, solutions like "LaSuite" (collaborative tool), "Tchap" (messaging), and "Visio" (video conferencing system) are being used and promoted more and more.
We can say that, ultimately, a major European state is taking the plunge. Depending on how events unfold, this could have a snowball effect, motivating other states and administrations to dare to regain control.
Europe has relied for too long on the services provided by major American providers. We can only rejoice in this transition and hope that such migrations are successful. Perhaps Bern should take a leaf out of France's book and also reduce its digital dependence for essential services...
