/e/OS 4.0: A Smoother Transition

Some time ago, I told you about my migration from an iPhone to /e/OS. Recently, Murena (the company behind this operating system) released /e/OS 4.0. Let’s take a look at the main new features and what’s coming next.

The ambitious goal set by Gaël Duval (CEO of Murena and former developer of Linux Mandrake) is clear: to move away from Apple and Google!

🔹 Easier Migration from Gmail

One of the most relevant new features is the Gmail to Murena Workspace migration tool. This was already partially available in /e/OS version 3 (migration of contacts, calendars, and Google Drive files). Now, a new feature has been added: a step-by-step guide to:

Set up an automatic redirect from Gmail.
Notify your contacts that you have a new email address.
Facilitate the transition without losing your data.

🔹 Improved Compatibility

Until now, /e/OS’s weak point was its compatibility with banking apps. These types of apps typically require Google verification certificates to work.

It seems this has been improved: for example, my "Swisscard" app, which didn’t work in version 3, now launches without any issues since the update to /e/OS 4.0.

🔹 Features for Businesses

With this new version, Murena is launching a charm offensive aimed at businesses, attempting to replace services like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Among the tools offered:

Murena Sign (documentation): for electronic signatures.
Murena Meet (documentation): for video conferencing.
MDM (Mobile Device Management): to manage mobile devices in a business environment.

🔹 The Future Looks Even Brighter

In my opinion, the main drawback highlighted in this article was the lack of full device backup. Indeed, a backup like "iCloud", where you can restore your phone identically in case of a problem or phone change, was sorely missing.

Good news: this should arrive with /e/OS 4.1, with a backup that will be directly stored in Murena’s cloud.

Additionally:

Murena Maps, the mapping and navigation system, is now in beta phase and should be fully operational with version 4.1.
The built-in password manager, currently limited to the default browser, will soon be available as a standalone app.

📌 In Summary

In short, you get the idea: Murena is trying to carve out a place among smartphone operating systems, and it seems to have all the right cards to succeed!
